Today, we say goodbye to the old year and ring in the new year. Believe it or not, this day is all about owning your space. I remember as a child that once the clock struck midnight, all of us kids were given pots or pans and something to hit against them. We would run all over the house and the yard hitting our pots or pans and yelling at the top of our lungs. I didn’t understand then why we did that, but now that I understand it is a tradition we continue in our house. When the clock strikes midnight, the kids will be given pots or pans and something to bang against them. They’ll be let free to run all over the house screaming at the top of their lungs, and we will own our space.

Most of Capricorn is ruled by the Queen of Pentacles in Tarot:

Queen of Pentacles from Weird World Tarot

Queens are all about mastery of whatever they rule over. In this case, it is the material world and how they interact with that world. When we work toward our highest ideals, we encompass strength and determination. We are not stingy or trying to keep everything for ourselves, in a rat race to keep up with the Joneses. Instead, we are balanced and not easily swayed by everything material…we own our material world and it does not own us.

After coming off the Black Moon last night and still feeling its effects as we go into the New Year, we set our intentions so we can find more of a balance and be the master of our material world. The Queen asks us to recognize ourselves honestly and take account of what we master and what is a master to us. Remember, we are still in the thick of Capricorn season, which is ruled by The Devil.

The Devil from Weird World Tarot

The Queen of Pentacles has faced her demons and put them in their place. She has shone a light on the dark crevices of her mind and taken stock of what may have had mastery over her. She has defeated The Devil and sits on her thrown. This is what we are asked of at this time, to face our own demons and go into this new year taking back control of our lives in this material world. The Queen of Pentacles asks us to embody her energy and embrace our own material power over our own world at this time.

Going back to our yearly tradition, there is a belief that sound that can change the stagnant air around you. We put Witches’ Bells on our doors to dispel any negative energy when the door opens. Banging of the pots and pans is pretty much the same thing. When you bang your pots and pans and yell at the top of your lungs around your home (both inside and out), you are claiming your space and owning it. Any negative energy at that time is dispersed and cleaned out. Not to mention, you get a kick out of the kids being completely free in that moment. Another reason you have kids do it, nothing beats their innocence when cleaning out negative energies.

May this coming year be filled with hope, happiness, strength, and overcoming the chains and fears that hold you back. Stay safe and own your space tonight. See you next year!
