Tomorrow (January 8th), Mercury will enter Capricorn. This is a time when the ruler of communication, technology, commerce, and thought processes digs up fears that may have been repressed. Our Sun is currently in Capricorn and will remain there until until January 19th. The Sun shines on our fears so that we can be a leader in facing them. Mercury digs down to bring those fears up so they can be worked on. Mercury is associated with The Magician in Tarot and is known for his wits and ability to manifest what he wants. During this transit through Capricorn, The Magician (Mercury) will be our teacher. The lesson to be learned is facing our fears, represented by The Devil (Capricorn in astrology).

The Magician as our teacher…aka Mercury
In Tarot, The Magician has all the tools he needs to manifest the life he wants on the table before him. Although he may not be ready for everything, he can figure it out with what he has. That’s pretty much what Mercury is about as well since he is one of the planets that rules our everyday lives versus being a social or outer planet. We often don’t realize that we have all the tools we need in front of us. Yes, our tools will eventually need to get upgraded – but for the most part we have everything we need to get started.
When The Magician is upright (or Mercury is Direct), there is pure, raw potential waiting to be tamed by us. Situations will arise where maybe we don’t feel like we know what we’re doing. Maybe we are second guessing ourselves, afraid that whatever decision we make is wrong (we’ll get into that in a bit). The Magician’s job is to bring about situations in life where we are forced to put to practice the lesson we are to learn. The Magician doesn’t teach by guiding us on what to do – he teaches us by throwing us into the fire. We’ll need to start trusting our intuition eventually.

The Devil as our lesson…aka Capricorn
Capricorn is associated with The Devil in Tarot. I love this card, but it gets such a bad wrap. So many people assume it’s some evil force coming after you. The truth is that in Tarot, if you get The Devil there is something that is chaining you down but you could easily walk away from. Those chains are our own self-doing. Ask any Capricorn – they can easily run a company, a family, or be the leader of every group. But it’s not something that comes naturally – they have to face their own internal fears before they can be the leaders they were born to be.
When Mercury enters Capricorn, fears will arise in all the areas that Mercury oversees. The lesson is to use the tools you already have in your arsenal to face those fears and shine light on what needs to change. It’s scary facing our own fears – that’s why they are fears. However, in order for us to grow and become the people we are meant to be, it’s necessary uncomfortableness we all need to go through.

How do the other transits affect Mercury entering Capricorn?
Fears and dealing with the underbelly of things has been an ongoing theme lately. We’ve recently had Pluto shift into Aquarius. We’re being slammed with a barrage of the underbelly being called out and people having to take a deep look at themselves. Pluto is represented by Judgement and is all about seeing about the light and dark sides of yourself. Right now it might feel like all we are seeing is the dark, but from the dark comes light.
Then we’ve got Mars Retrograde entering Cancer, forcing us show our resilience, determination, and emotional intelligence. It’s one thing to have to be emotionally mature, it’s another thing to be emotionally mature when having to face the darkness and our fears all at once. However, the Universe is reminding us that we have to push through. We will come out better if we are honest with ourselves about ourselves. Let me say that again, we will come out better if we are honest with ourselves about ourselves. Otherwise, those situations will go from obstacles to overwhelming mountain ranges.
I know the world may seem like a dark place right now, but out of darkness comes light if we keep putting our lessons to practice. Have faith and know that you are stronger than you give yourself credit for.
