Tomorrow, January 27th, Mercury will make its transition into Aquarius. Aquarius is a pretty busy sign right now. The Sun and Pluto are both in Aquarius as of now. The New Moon and Mercury are soon to join the crowd as well. It’s normal for the Sun, the Moon, and Mercury to all make their Aquarian transits. What is making this more important than all the previous times is that Pluto is currently transiting Aquarius for the first time in 248 years. If you are asking yourself why this Mercury in Aquarius transit feels like there is so much going on – it’s because of Pluto.

Understanding how Mercury will add its own flavor to the mix means that we also need to understand how Pluto is affecting this transit. Currently, we are only a few months into the almost 20-year transit of Pluto in Aquarius. In the first few years of Pluto in Aquarius, it’s all about destabilizing and revolutionizing the world as we know it. Pluto is shining a light on the darkest parts of society in hopes society will choose to regrow in a more fair, better way. Remember, we all have free will. Just because someone shines a light on the monster in the closet doesn’t mean that everyone will drive the monster out. Each and every one of us must choose how we want live our lives. Unfortunately, not everyone wants a fair society. We are going to continue to see a lot of things that shock us.

Now that we understand how Pluto brings its own flavor to any Aquarius transit, let’s look to the cards to see what that means for the Mercury in Aquarius Transit. Mercury is the Planet and will be our teacher. Since Aquarius is the sign, this will be our lesson. We’ll also look more in-depth to see what energies will be working in the background, and what energies we should to try to embody during this transit. Let’s look to the cards to get a better understanding.

The Magician as our Teacher: The Planet Mercury

The Magician from Weird World Tarot

In Tarot, The Magician is pure potential. He has everything he needs to work his magic laying on the table in front of him. All of the tools on The Magician’s table also represent the areas that Mercury rules over: cups for how we express with our emotions, a wand to represent the inspirations we can create, a knife/sword for our mental endeavors, and pentacle to represent our everyday business.

The Magician reminds us that we have all the tools we need at our disposal, even when we think we don’t have any. As Magicians, we are able to create what we want. We may make mistakes, we might even fail the first time. With practice, we can wield our tools with mastery. When Mercury transits any sign, it’s a reminder that we can create and make what we want how we want. During Mercury’s transit through Aquarius, he is here to teach us to take charge with the tools we have. Our ancestors who practiced folk magic didn’t always have the exact tool or ingredient needed. They earned the name Magician because of their ability to substitute the tools needed with what they have. Mercury asks you to do the same.

Let’s take a look at our lesson…

The Star as Our Lesson: The Sign Aquarius

A young woman sitting in the lake of stars and using the light of a star to create something new
The Star from Weird World Tarot

In Tarot, The Star is a beautiful card and concept, but it really does tend to be misunderstood. This card is about dissolution of the old so that something new can be created. This card represents innovation and creating something from an idea in the dark. In modern times, we are taught to fear the dark so much. Without darkness, light would never be created. Babies are held in their mothers’ dark wombs for nine months. Seeds germinate in the ground, shoved deep in the darkness. So many wonderful things are created while growing in the darkness.

Aquarius is the sign of social awareness and innovation. In order to create something new, we have to first accept that what we do affects others. That’s the social awareness aspect of Aquarius. The creation of something new is the innovation aspect. When Mercury transits Aquarius, Mercury is teaching us that we have the tools we need to create something that takes into account everyone. Businesses can create business plans that take everyone into account. The ideas we speak should be socially minded. The Mercury in Aquarius transit asks us to be innovative in ways that progress all of society.

Energies affecting the Mercury in Aquarius Transit

Each sign is broken up into what we call decans. Since each sign has 30 degrees, the decans are split into 10 degree increments. Every sign will have three decan rulers or lords that will better explain the energies each decan gives while the planet transits the sign.

First Decan in Aquarius: The Five of Swords

When Mercury first enters Aquarius, it will remain in the first decan until February 3, 2025. During that time, there will be a lot of things that seem to go haywire. We have to get the wind knocked out of us so we can understand that things aren’t working. The way we do business doesn’t work for everyone. The way we communicate isn’t working for everyone. Our access to resources are available to everyone. This period of destabilization forces us to realize that there needs to be a revolution in the way we do things.

If you feel like everything is going wrong and things aren’t working, you are not alone. Especially with the current Pluto in Aquarius transit, these disparities are going to be highlighted even more. Pluto shows us the underbelly of anything it is transiting before change can happen. This means that what we experience is going to be heightened compared to other times because we are being shown the ugly side of things. These first few days of the Mercury in Aquarius transit are your call to action. What you see breaking down is your opportunity to create something new. The Magician reminds you that you have all the tools you need.

Second Decan in Aquarius: The Six of Swords

The Six of Swords from Weird World Tarot

From February 4th to February 9th, Aquarius will be ruled by the second decan. This represents a time of sacrificing. More importantly, this is a time of making willing sacrifices that are take everyone into account. This means making decisions that better your family and your community. When you make the willing sacrifices, you are rewarded with earned success. Remember, every step of the way we have free will.

We can be called to action and not everyone will heed the call. We can be asked to make the necessary sacrifices, but not everyone will answer. We may all be experiencing the same Mercury in Aquarius transit, but we will all be having our separate experiences.

As Mercury transits through Aquarius’ second decan, we have all the tools we need to innovate something better than what was there. Remember, The Star is associated with Aquarius. The Star represents dissolution of the old so that something new can be created. That willing sacrifice I’m talking about is a dissolution of the old, it’s letting go of what once was.

I do think it’s important to note that a willing sacrifice can be something small. Not all revolutions are enormous acts that are visible to everyone in the world. A willing sacrifice is seeing that your family doesn’t have the same kind of money it used to have. Instead of buying that cup of coffee, you start making your own coffee every morning. You’ve willingly sacrificed spending money on coffee. Your earned success is that you are now saving money and you’ve learned how to make coffee the way you prefer. Not to mention, you don’t have to wait in long lines or possibly get out of your car if you’re lazy like me.

Third Decan of Aquarius: Seven of Swords

The Seven of Swords from Weird World Tarot

From February 9th to the end of the Mercury in Aquarius transit, Mercury will transit through the last decan of Aquarius. The Seven of Swords rules over the third decan. This card is pretty controversial. Some people will say this represents spies or thieves you must be weary of during this part of the transit. For me, I see this as remembering that not everyone made it out of their shadow period. This is a reminder that while you are continuing your journey forward, you have to be careful of those that refuse to acknowledge their shadows.

If you happen to be one of the few that do decide to take these spiritual journeys that have real world effects, you will need to watch for those that want to pull you back down. The first decan was a destabilization of your current internal world. Then you made willing sacrifices that earned you success. Remember how I said everyone has their own experiences? Well, for the people who haven’t put in the work you have to be careful of their shadows. As you start to build and continue on your journey, this is a time where you are most vulnerable. This is a time when others will be jealous or not want you to change. Keep pushing forward, you are making the necessary changes to progress forward.

Energy to embody during the Mercury in Aquarius Transit: The King of Swords

A king sitting on his thrown high in the clouds with a sword as his crown
The King of Swords from Weird World Tarot

Aquarius happens to be an air sign. Air signs rule over thoughts and the mind. During this transit, we are asked to embody the energy of the King of Swords. In Tarot, Kings are rulers. They have gone through the different development stages to finally be at point where they can rule themselves and their minds. This is especially important as we go through this transit. As a ruler of our own minds, we must take accountability for our mental health and the way we think. When we embody this energy, we are taking accountability and responsibility. We are fully aware of our thought patterns.

As a ruler, our minds can either be our greatest assets or our worst enemies. The choice really is ours. How will you embody this energy? Will you allow your mind to be ruled by others? Or, will you take responsibility of your own thoughts? Tarot gives us guidance and choices on how we want to proceed. It is not Tarot’s job to tell us how to act, but what energies are going to be around us so we can choose how to act.

Final Mercury in Aquarius transit thoughts

This year, Aquarius brings us a lot to think about and do. We’ve seen in recent days how quickly the world can change. The old is being dissolved whether we like it or not. However, it is up to us what we want created in its place. The way we do business, the way we think, the way we express ourselves – all of this is changing rapidly. Especially with Pluto jumping in the mix, everything seems to be a little grander in the way this is displayed. Take rulership of your mind and make the necessary steps to progress forward.

Remember that not everyone will be willing to take these steps forward with you. That is their right and their choice. Since we know a light is being shone on the shadows, remember there will be some people that want to bring you back down from where you’ve progressed. You’ve made the decision to move forward – don’t let them stop you. As always – stay safe and aware!
