A warrior looking for a new land and guided by the moon. An example of the New Moon in Aquarius.

Aquarius has been a busy sign lately. There have been several transits taking place in Aquarius, demanding that we innovate and embrace change. Currently, we’ve got Pluto in Aquarius, the Sun is in its yearly Aquarian transit, Mercury entered Aquarius, and now we’ve got the New Moon in Aquarius. The New Moon will reach its peak on January 29th. Aquarius has definitely been having a party. Remember, Aquarius is the sign of social awareness and innovation. If you feel like social issues have been in your face…well, they have been.

The Moon is special in its own way. Using Tarot to interpret Astrology gives us a deeper meaning of what the Moon asks us to do each time it’s either full or new. The Moon will be our teacher and Aquarius will be our lesson. We’ll also take a closer look at the flavor of this transit. When I say flavor, I mean the ruler of the decan when the New Moon reaches it peak. For instance, the New Moon will peak at 9 degrees Aquarius. Each decan brings its own additional flavor to the lesson and teachings of each transit.

Let’s look to the cards to fully understand this New Moon in Aquarius transit…

The Moon is a very feminine aspect in Astrology. Women have always been connected to the Moon since they follow the Moon’s cycles. Women have 13 menstrual cycles a year just like the 13 cycles of the Moon a year. More importantly, the Moon represents our internal world. That is what we call the yin energy, or the feminine energy. In Astrology, feminine energy is our internal world – our emotions and thoughts. The masculine energy is our outer world – our actions and the words we say.

When the Moon is new, it’s time to look inward and decide what we want from the world. This is the time we set our intentions for the next couple of weeks. The Full Moon was recently in Cancer (read more here Full Moon in Cancer: Embrace Your Inner Journey). We looked at what was holding us back emotionally so we could release them. Now comes the New Moon. New Moons ask that we set intentions and are honest about what it is we want from the Universe.

The Star as our Lesson: Aquarius’ transit role

Aquarius is represented by The Star in Tarot. This is the sign of innovation and social awareness. In Tarot, The Star represents a dissolution of the old so something new can be created. There are millions of people setting their New Year’s resolutions, but why are we so driven to do so? Hello Aquarius Season! The old year has dissolved and it’s time to prepare for what we want this new year.

This year is a little more potent. With Pluto, the Sun, and Mercury all in Aquarius, innovation and dissolution of the old is screaming loudly. What does that mean for the New Moon? It means taking the time to really think about what we want. Not just for ourselves but what we feel we are being called to do. Do you feel called to start working out? Are you being called to start that new pottery class or cooking class? What is that new thing you’ve been feeling like it’s time to start for a while but it’s been screaming at you for the last day or two?

New Moons don’t mean to start right away on what it is you want. Instead, this is the time to identify and be honest about what it is you want. Start making your plans so you can begin taking the necessary steps over the next few weeks. Each small step gets you closer to your goal.

Each sign has 30 degrees, and every 10 degrees is called a decan. There are three decans in each sign, and each decan has its own ruler. When the New Moon reaches its peak, it will be at 9 degrees in Aquarius which is ruled by the Five of Swords. Originally, this was named as the Lord of Defeat by The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. But, I didn’t really feel like that encompassed the true meaning of this card. I’ve renamed this to the Lord of Destabilization and Revolution.

Right now, it might feel like things aren’t working. It might even feel like it’s time for an overhaul. There are so many planets in this first decan, ruled by the Lord of Destabilization and Revolution. You are not alone. The Universe is saying it’s time to make changes. Take the time to use this New Moon to figure out what steps you need to take to start making changes. Even if it’s small steps, any step is a step forward.

My final Moon musings

Getting in tune with the Moon is a great way to get into shadow work. If you aren’t familiar with shadow work, it’s taking an honest look at yourself. We throw things into the shadow that we are ashamed of or even the dreams we used to have because we don’t think we’re good enough. Getting in tune with the Moon helps us shine a light on our shadow selves so we can integrate it back into our whole selves. It’s scary thinking about getting in tune with our emotions. Strength comes from our vulnerability – so take the leap and be strong!
